Panel 1

Demon-Roach #1: Fellow evil folks, welcome once again to the Demon Roach Entertainment Network. We have a spectacular show for you today.
Demon-Roach Bookie: The name of the game is "Dead or Alive?". As always, ladies bet first.

Panel 2

Tsukiko: Ha! Dead, definitely dead.
Boot Wight: Yeah, he's a goner.
Jirix: Put my gold on "Alive", please. I'm feeling lucky.
Demon-Roach #1: And the skeleton gets the last say.
Xykon: Hmmm...a tough call, but I'm going to have to agree with the orange guy and say "Alive"—but with negative hit points.
Demon-Roach #1: Oooo, playing the longshot!

Panel 3

Demon-Roach Bookie: O.K, all bets are in, let's get this—
Monster in the Darkness: Wait!
Monster in the Darkness: Wait, I want to play, too.
Demon-Roach #2: No way, kid, we run a legit operation. Scram.

Panel 4

Monster in the Darkness: I have money! See?
Demon Roach #2: That's Monopoly money.
Monster in the Darkness: Yeah, but it's REAL Monopoly money this time. I learned my lesson.
Demon-Roach #3 wears a top hat, has a bushy white mustache, and sits on a small green Monopoly house.
Demon-Roach #3: Take the bet.

Panel 5

Monster in the Darkness: Awesome! I want to bet on "Escapes and lives happily ever after".
Demon-Roach #2: Again? You try that bet every time.

Panel 6

The scene reveals O-Chul being dangled by two hobgoblins over a pit of acid with a shark and some spikes in it.
Demon-Roach Bookie: Well, if you want to throw your real fake money away, who are we to stop you?
Demon-Roach Bookie: DROP HIM!
Monster in the Darkness: You can do it, Mr. Stiffly! I believe in you!
Demon-Roach #4: Is that an acid-breathing shark?!?
Demon-Roach #5: Yeah. They'll let any old hack write a sourcebook these days.

D&D Context[]

  • The Acidborn shark first appeared in Dungeonscape, a Dungeons & Dragons Supplement which Rich Burlew co-wrote.
  • A character reduced to negative hit points, in most situations, falls unconscious and begins bleeding out, only dying at -10 HP. As characters at high levels can have hit points of well over 100 (O-Chul, with his high Constitution, is likely to be closer to 200), such a character being dropped to the threshold of negative HP without dying is a rare event.

Trivia[]

  • The title plays on the 1957 hit single Gamblin' Man, by Woodie Guthrie and skiffle artist Lonnie Donegan.
  • This is the first appearance of the Acid-born shark and the Hobgoblins of Shark Tank.
