Panel 1

Haley and Roy are walking stage left
Haley: I'm just saying I don't think we can trust them.
Roy: That's because you have trust issues.

Panel 2

Haley: What?? That's not true!
Roy: Sure it is. You don't trust anyone we meet. For example, you didn't trust the barmaid at the tavern before we left. You kept saying she was "scamming" us.

Panel 3

Haley: She totally was scamming us! "Tips"? C'mon, like we're going to give her more money just for doing her job.
Roy: I rest my case.

Panel 4

They arrive at Nale and Sabine
Roy: Nale, we have a proposal for you. We'd like your team to join us in our quest to destroy Xykon the Lich.
Nale: Hmm, a capital idea! Unfortunately, we have our own quest we have been charged to complete.

Panel 5

Cut to the Talisman of Dorukan
Nale (inset): We seek the fabled Talisman of Dorukan, a mighty relic secreted within this very dungeon.

Panel 6

Nale: We have been charged by our wise and benevolent king to retrive[sic] it.
Sabine: King? What ki—OWW!
Nale nudges Sabine. "nudge!"
Sabine: Oh right. THAT king.

Panel 7

Roy: Well, that sounds like a fine and noble quest! Why don't we help you with that, and you can help beat Xykon?
Haley: Geez, grow a Sense Motive.
Nale: Agreed!

Panel 8

Nale: Let's shake on it.
Roy and Nale shake hands. "shake!"

Panel 9

Cut to Nale alone with a black background.
Nale (thinking): My Machiavellian plan is beginning to come together. Now that I have secured the aid of these gullible saps, the Talisman shall be mine!

Panel 10'

Nale (thinking): Indeed, I have worked for years for this very day. It seems like just yesterday when my father took me aside and told me—

Panel 11

Cut back to Roy and Haley standing next to Nale. Nale smiles in silence for a beat.

Panel 12

Haley (whispering): Psst! Why's he just standing there?
Roy (whispering): Internal monologue. Give him a minute.

D&D Context[]

  • The Sense Motive skill is the one used to determine whether a character is lying, effectively serving as a counter skill to Bluff. As a Fighter class Roy is unlikely to have much points in it, as was proven in "Treasure? What Treasure?" when Haley was able to outrageously lie to Roy.

Trivia[]

  • The "Weird Al" Yankovic song "Grow" has a rather usual version of "get a clue", "grow a clue". Haley is substituting the Game skill sense motive in this case.
