Cast Edit

Transcript Edit

Panel 1

Elan and the Mind flayer are siting on the floor playing Scrabble
Elan: What's a "zyqxuwy"?
Squid Thingy: It's a type of fish.
Elan: Oh, OK. And a triple word score...

Panel 2

Rest of the Order enter stage left
Roy: There you are! We've been looking all over for you!
Elan: Hey guys! Meet my new friend...

Panel 3

The panel reads: "Hey kids! See what the Mind Flayer is thinking!" An arrow points right.

Panel 4

Durkon with his head being a bowl of mash potatoes
Squid Thingy (thinking, inset): Filling, but bland.

Panel 5

Haley with her head being a caramel sundae
Squid Thingy (thinking, inset): Tasty, but too sweet.

Panel 6

Belkar with his head being a taco
Squid Thingy (thinking, inset): Too angry... I'd get heartburn.

Panel 7

Elan with his head being a can of Diet Coke™
Squid Thingy (thinking, inset): Next!

Panel 8

V with their head being a cheeseburger with lettuce and tomato
Squid Thingy (thinking, inset): Now we're getting somewhere...

Panel 9

Roy with his head being a roast turkey
Squid Thingy (thinking, inset): Mmmmmmmm...

Panel 10

The Mind Flayer attacks Roy.
Roy: Aaaaah!

Panel 11

Haley: Why is he attacking Roy like that?
Vaarsuvius: Why are you eating him?? I am a wizard! A delectable 18 Intelligence right before you!

Panel 12

Elan (hand on V's shoulder): Would you feel better if one of us ate your brain?
Vaarsuvius No it just wouldn't be the same. *Sigh*
Roy A little help here?
The mind flayer eats Roy's brains, "slurp slurp slurp".

D&D Context Edit

  • Squid Thingy's scrabble word is likely a reference to D&D writers and fantasy writers in general use of exotic consonant-vowel combinations for psionic things (e.g. Xeph, Phthisic, Githzerai, which all come from D&D's 3.5 Expanded Psionics Handbook).
  • Intelligence is the primary stat of wizards like Vaarsuvius and not all that important for fighters like Roy Greenhilt.

Trivia Edit

  • The comic establishes Roy as being intelligent, which is atypical to a Fighter.
  • This comic also establishes that Vaarsuvius has 18 Intelligence.
