D&D Context[]

  • Gnomes in D&D have a longstanding association with unusual levels of technological advancement. The concept originated from the Mystara setting, one of the earliest D&D settings, where the gnomes of the setting successfully deciphered an ancient artifact and therefore obtained advanced technology, which they used to construct the great flying city of Serraine. The concept was expanded upon more heavily with the Tinker Gnomes of Dragonlance, a comic relief race which had a a strong cultural bent towards building highly advanced, yet impractical machines, and which expanded further into Spelljammer, where they managed to reach space through all manner of bizarre contraptions (the most infamous being wheel-boats powered by giant hamsters).

Trivia[]

  • Steampunk is a subgenre of science fiction and fantasy that incorporates 19th century industrial steam-powered technology and aesthetic designs.
