With their weapons ineffective, Roy is being beaten by the silicon elemental. Out of potions, Haley takes Greenhilt to draw the elemental's attacks. Roy switches to archery, but runs into a logistical problem.
- Panel 1
Roy: Unnngh! *kaff! kaff!*
Roy: Does anyone have any *cough* healing potions left?
Haley: You already drank my last one.
Elan: Of coarse I'm out of healing spells, too!
- Panel 2
Roy: Alright, guys... if I get killed again, I want you to head back to Sandsedge and try to contact Hinjo. Maybe you can—
Haley steals Roy's sword.
Haley: Nuh uh, no way I'm stuck being the leader again.
Haley: If we can't heal you, then we need to change its target!
- Panel 3
Haley: Nyah nyah! Look at me! I'm a human with a greatsword!
Haley: Are you sure I'm not the one you're supposed to kill first?
- Panel 4
Elan: Isn't she just the bravest?
Roy: Elan, stop swooning over your girlfriend and fight!
Elan: I can do both at the same time, thank you.
- Panel 5
The elemental attacks Haley.
Haley: Roy, why don't you *hack!* use some of those fancy weapon proficiencies of yours?
- Panel 6
Roy picks up Haley's bow.
Roy: Ugh, I haven't picked up one of these since I finished my two mandatory semesters of Archery.
- Panel 7
Roy fire the arrow and it passes through the elemental.
- Panel 8
Elan: Hey, that was awesome! You're, like, good at stuff!
Roy: It's as big as a house, I doubt I could miss it. I think as long as I keep hitting it, I can—
- Panel 9
Roy reaches for another arrow, notices he has no quiver.
- Panel 10
Roy: Elan, where does Haley keep her arrows?
Elan: I dunno. They just sort of appear in her hand when she needs one.
- Panel 11
Belkar: Geez, what is it with that guy and needing to figure out all the fiddly little details?
Haley: I know, right? It's called "Suspension of Disbelief," Roy!
D&D Context Edit
- Many games of D&D don't bother to keep track of small items such as low-cost spell components and arrows. Though this is not realistic, it speeds the gameplay which would otherwise be spent accounting for things that don't increase the enjoyment of the game.
- The title is a play on the phrase "Live by the sword, die by the sword" from the Gospel of Matthew and originally from Agamemnon by Aeschylus. Redcloak commanded the elemental to attack the person with the sword, and Haley has seized upon this technicality to make it attack her instead of Roy by taking up his sword.
